Public Schools in the Charlottesville Area

The two school districts that serve students in the Charlottesville area are Charlottesville City Schools and Albemarle County Public Schools. Browse the district profiles below to find student/teacher ratios, public school district overviews, and a list of schools in the district. 

Charlottesville City Schools (CCS) District

Students who live within the city of Charlottesville attend public schools in the Charlottesville City Schools district. Public schools in this school system often have small class sizes and diverse academic programs, helping your child to succeed and to enjoy learning in a safe environment. A well-rounded education is the focus of the elementary school curriculums, which is why Kindergarten through 4th grade students takes classes in art, music, and Spanish.

Charlottesville High School offers over 30 Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses combined to prepare students for college. Of the number of students who take the AP exam, nearly 70% earn passing scores of 3 or higher.

Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) District

Students who live outside of Charlottesville city limits attend public schools in the Albemarle County Public Schools district. The public school district incorporates technology into the schools, and there are on average 2 students per computer in ACPS.

Albemarle County Public Schools has over 1,200 teachers — 64% hold advanced degrees, and 38 are National Board Certified — who seek to help students achieve in academics and in their community. High school graduates are accepted to the top public and private universities in the country, and about 86% of graduates pursue higher education after high school. Students who took the AP exams do well on the tests; 76.5% of AP test-takers earned a passing score of 3 or higher in 2015.
